While the Telegraph and Mescal fires in Globe, Arizona are thankfully 65% and 88% contained, hazardous smoke continues to disburse west towards my home in the Phoenix Metro Area. Just a few moments of exposure to this smoke can cause symptoms like scratchy throat, cough, irritated sinuses, headaches, runny nose, and stinging eyes; and more serious reactions among those in high-risk groups. So I’m getting my physical activity indoors for a while.
When Air Pollution Can Cause a Health Threat
Excessive or persistent air pollution, like smoke, is a health threat, particularly to children, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system. Smoke is made up of gases and microscopic particles called particulate matter (PM). If PM is inhaled deeply into the lungs, it can damage lung tissue and cause respiratory problems. With those potential health threats in mind, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality suggests we avoid physical activity outdoors when smoke is present in the environment; but we can’t just sit and be still.
How to Train Indoors
Movement is essential for overall heath! So while we can’t go outside, we must keep moving. My solution is bodyweight circuit training. At home with just a mat and a small space in my bedroom I can complete a total body workout that challenges both my cardiovascular and muscular systems. Executing my workout routine indoors significantly reduces my exposure to harsh pollutants from the smoke. I give my lungs an even greater advantage by using an air filtration unit, closing the windows, and running the air conditioning on recirculate or fan while working out.
